About Marshal
I have taught courses at McGill University and New York University, as well as private lessons for many years. I hold a Master's Degree with honors in Music Performance from McGill University and an Artist Diploma from NYU. I have been teaching music theory to students of all different levels for 7+ years now, and I love to see my students progress. Aside from teaching, I am a professional jazz double bassist and singer-songwriter. I perform regularly as both a sideman and as a leader featuring my own original music. My music has gotten a lot of attention from reputable press outlets, and I have had my songs played on many radio stations (including CBC) and featured in editorial Spotify playlists, garnering hundreds of thousands of streams. I have recently graduated with an artist diploma at one of the world's leading music conservatories; New York University in Manhattan, New York under scholarship. I have recently recorded with GRAMMY award-winning jazz musicians based out of New York City, and I am very active as a performer/educator in New York's electric music scene.

My teaching methods will vary depending on skill level. I believe it is essential to develop sufficient technique on any instrument as a foremost goal, and so if you are new to the instrument, we will start there. I have a broad understanding of world music/musical theory spanning many different genres (specializing in jazz). I approach each lesson with structure, but I have lots of room for flexibility, and I am open to helping people learn whatever musical style they are most passionate about. My lessons can be geared to players of all ages and skill levels. I have lots of experience teaching newer students because I have a strong method to develop technique that my teachers have passed on to me. I also love to work with intermediate and more advanced players, diving into more complex subject matter and musical conceptions. Though I specialize in bass, I also offer beginner to intermediate acoustic guitar lessons and have lots of experience teaching children and adults the basics of guitar. I would love to hear from you and help you or your child develop this craft and discover a love for this beautiful art form we call music. I am a recent graduate from one of the world's leading music conservatories; New York University located in Manhattan, New York. I will be giving lessons via Zoom remotely as I am currently located in NY. My hourly rate is based upon my qualifications, which include a master's degree in music performance, teaching experience at both NYU and McGill University, and CBC national radio airplay for my original compositions.

Perfect! Very good approach to teaching - motivating, and thorough

Perfect! Marshal was excellent at explaining things and giving good, practical exercises for getting to know the fretboard better. His easygoing manner coupled with in-depth knowledge of the instrument made the lesson easy and fun.

On top of being a great dude, Marshal is an outstanding bassist and educator, who displays a vast amout of knowledge across many different musical genres. Whether you are just starting out, looking to get deep into Scott Lafaro jazz solo (or anything in between), look no further, Marshal is your guy!
