About Gary
My degree is in mathematics, with QTS. I went into computing afterwards because it came easily and I liked the mathematics underneath it, and I now teach Computer Science at a college in Brighton.
I started my MSc in astrophysics with no physics qualification at all. Not A Level, not GCSE. I taught myself the fundamentals while the course was already running, which meant learning where the ideas come from rather than remembering what to write down. I finished it, and I am now doing a PhD, modelling how massive stars form.
That is why I am useful to a student who is stuck. I have had to build this subject from nothing myself, fairly recently, so I know which bits are genuinely hard and which only look it.
Most students I meet do not lack ability. They have been told, or have decided, that they are not a science person. That is almost always wrong and it is usually the first thing we deal with.

I start the first lesson with a question rather than a topic. Something simple, with no numbers in it, where the answer has to be reasoned out rather than looked up. It shows me quickly whether you understand what is going on or have been remembering formulae and hoping.
After that I teach what that tells me to teach. I do not start at the front of the specification.
A lot of GCSE physics marks are lost on the maths, not the physics. Rearranging, standard form, significant figures, units. If that is where it is going wrong, we fix it there.
Then it is teaching and past papers, marked the way the examiner marks them, so you can see where the marks are going and why. I set a little work between lessons and we go through it at the start of the next.
Online or in person. AQA, Edexcel and OCR, Foundation and Higher, separate sciences or trilogy.

I've gotten to know Gary over the past 9 years and have had the pleasure of being taught by him. He is an amazing teacher who has always been super helpful as well as patient and understanding when helping me in areas I've struggled with. Overall, he has helped me become a more confident learner and I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a supportive and approachable tutor.
Not only is Gary a fantastic teacher who is so dedicated to his job, but as well an incredibly lovely person and I can't thank him enough for all his help :)Gary is a fantastic tutor who is exceptionally knowledgeable, supportive, and generous with his time. I know Gary through working alongside him and have seen first-hand how committed he is to helping students learn and build confidence. His knowledge of coding, Computer Science, and Mathematics is outstanding, and he explains complex ideas in a clear, logical, and engaging way. What makes Gary particularly impressive is the breadth of his knowledge; alongside Mathematics, Computer Science, and programming, he has a strong interest in astronomy, space, stars, and rocketry. I have also seen the excellent student club he established, where students could explore coding, Mathematics, astronomy, and other STEM topics beyond the classroom. Gary is approachable, patient, reliable, and genuinely enthusiastic about teaching. I would highly recommend him to any student looking for an inspiring, knowledgeable, and supportive tutor.
