About Baxter
I have recently taught maths at a state school in Brent for four years and have enjoyed being part of the development and positive change within my school. I completed the Teach First Leadership Development programme having graduated with a 2:1 in Physics and Philosophy in 2013; and have worked my way through leadership positions at the school. I became Key Stage 5 Coordinator during my year as a Newly Qualified Teacher and after two years was promoted to Lead Practitioner in charge of gifted and able students. Since leaving teaching, I have been a private tutor for over a year and have loved every minute!

I do not think I teach in any way that has reinvented the wheel. I take more of a coaching style to my tutoring, coaxing out answers through effective use of questioning.
I enjoy demonstrating to a student that they are more than capable of reaching the answer based on their own understanding and planning incrementally harder tasks which allow a student to access each step necessary to understand a topic. Scaffolding my tasks and breaking down explanations into manageable tasks makes it easy to spot where a student loses understanding of a concept.
I suppose I also focus considerably on addressing misconceptions, and try to reinforce the view that mistakes are a learning opportunity rather than something to scribble out and ignore. Helping to make students aware of their common pitfalls builds greater understanding. I believe this helps to develop a student's independent approach to their studies, where they are more likely to spot their own errors, reflect on and evaluate their work. Overall, I try to build confidence... confidence in method, application and recall of the subject in whatever way I can.
