About Jean-René
Hi! I'm Jean-René, a passionate pianist and teacher originally from Montreal. I began studying classical piano at age 5 at the prestigious Académie de Musique Vincent-d'Indy. Over 15+ years of playing, I expanded into jazz, pop, blues, rock, funk, R&B and many other genres.
For the past 3 years, I've had the joy of teaching students of all ages and levels, both online and in person. I especially love working with children and nurturing their musical awakening, but I know it can happen at any age, and I'm eager to help every student build their skills, musicality and confidence. My goal is to give you a new outlet for self-expression, a place where you can feel free, confident and creative. Every student is unique, so I build lessons around your goals, learning style and pace.
Beyond the piano
I sing, play the transverse flute and play the guitar
I perform live, singing while playing piano and using live looping.
I compose, and I've been working in film scoring and music production for over 2 years.
I'm a loop-making specialist, and I teach it too.
Languages: I'm fully trilingual (English, French and Spanish), so we can work in whichever language feels most natural to you.

In our first few lessons, I take time to understand your learning style and musical goals in a friendly, engaging atmosphere. From there, everything is tailored to you.
Every student learns differently, and that's the fun part! Some love a clear classical path, with solid technique and confident sight-reading. Others would rather learn technique and theory through the songs they're dying to play. Both are welcome here, and you can mix the two however you like.
What we can explore together
1. Songs you love: play your favorite songs in pop, ballads, rock, blues, jazz and more. We start with simple, popular songs so you quickly build a repertoire of 10 songs you can play confidently for friends and family. Each new song raises the difficulty a little, so your skills grow naturally with every piece we learn together.
2. Reading and technique: read music and master simple techniques that make your playing sound great.
3. Chords, harmony and theory: accompaniment, harmony and the basic music theory you need to get going
4. Improvising and playing by ear: improvisation techniques for songs and for playing in a band
5. Singing and playing: techniques for singing while you play the keys
6. Looping: looping at the keyboard, a skill mostly used by guitarists but great on keys too
7. Music production: DAWs such as Ableton and Logic Pro, and apps such as Loopy Pro, with MIDI keyboards
8. Creating: composing, songwriting and jamming with others
Reading music, playing by ear, composing, improvising, songwriting and jamming are all part of the same musical language! Above all, I keep our time together fun, because if you love music, that's all you really need to get better.
Whether your dream is to perform, create your own music, or simply enjoy playing for yourself, I look forward to making music with you and unlocking your full potential!

If you want to learn from someone who doesn’t just teach music but truly lives it, reach out and book a lesson with him before his calendar fills up!Jean-René is an excellent tutor for learning step by step basic and intermediate piano playing and music theory, both for children and adults. You will learn to play some of your favourite songs in a matter of weeks and, step by step, master this beautiful instrument. If you already master the basics, you will be able to explore with him genres such as blues, rock, indie, pop and others and orient your learning accordingly. You will also be able learn techniques such as looping, which are increasingly used by keyboard players. Jean-René is available to give lessons not only in English, but also in French and Spanish, in case you would prefer your lessons in one of those languages.
I really enjoy my sessions with Jean! He’s patient, professional, and always keeps a great energy during our lessons. He makes me feel comfortable while practicing and helps me improve my French pronunciation naturally.
I learned French from Mr Jean Rene a year or two back and WOW I learned so much from the basics to conversational slang and words that pertained to my interests. I was traveling to Paris and wanted to get some French lessons in prior to my trip, and Mr Jean Rene was super helpful and patient in teaching me French!
Highly recommend for any beginner! His patient and friendly demeanor made it easy for me to learn and feel confident and comfortable speaking French!View more recommendations
