About Ms Shiren

A graduate of the University of Toronto with an academic focus in the social sciences and languages, I have also written journalistically for community magazines. I have been teaching languages for over 10 years and have helped many students access their desired levels from ESL to Academic Essay Writing, touching on all aspects in between, from understanding finer grammar points, etymology and effective writing techniques.

About the lesson

To write effectively, it is necessary to understand finer points in an intellectual debate. My Academic English Writing and Reading course spends time developing these critical thinking skills, in analysis and in written expression. Adequate research, formatting and advanced vocabulary are also discussed and reviewed. From this jump-off point, we move onto the writing stage, understanding register of language, advanced vocabulary and academic writing structure and conventions, as well as personal style. As a University of Toronto graduate, with journalistic writing experience, I can provide the guidance students may need to finesse their ideas into pleasant-to-read texts of varying styles. A natural aspect of academic writing includes academic research. This element underlines the course as we source materials and learn how to use them to best effect. Finally, editing text while applying advanced vocabulary and effective grammar and syntax are a key and final element in my methodology.
