About Jens

Hello,

I'm Jens. Originally from the Cologne area, I've been a qualified German, philosophy and politics tutor for 18 years. Until recently, I also acted as university teacher for 6 years, having taught at Oxford, the LSE and RWTH Aachen. I hold First-class undergraduate and graduate degrees in all subjects from RWTH Aachen University and the LSE, and I 'll soon be awarded a D.Phil. from the University of Oxford in my two areas of expertise- linguistics and political philosophy.

------------- German------------------------------------------------------------------------

German is not an easy language, so studying for exams can be stressful and time-consuming. Unless you get help from a qualified native tutor. I have 18 years of experience in preparing students for

GCSE German (Edexcel, AQA)
AS-Level German (Edexcel, AQA)
A-Level German (A2) (Edexcel, AQA)
IB German (standard and higher level) and French Baccaleaureate in German
Pre-U German
Goethe Institut exams (from A1 to C2)
Test DaF (all levels)
University exams at Bachelor, Masters and PhD-level.

While my aim as a tutor is that my German students ultimately speak the language, the focus of my tuition lies on getting the best possible result in the exam. I will tailor texts and grammar exercises relevant to the specific exam, and run through practice papers with you to explain the typical questions and requirements. Having prepared hundreds of students for all the qualifications named above, I am confident that my approach and experience will help you to achieve your aims.

I also prepare students for GCSE German and A-Level German exams as an outside option, if their schools do not offer German.

My track record

Over 95% of my students studying toward GCSE, AS-Level, A-Level, IB or the French Baccalaureate have achieved A* or the equivalent with an average preparation time of four to eight months of weekly two-hour tuition. All of my students have passed with B or higher.

90% of my students have passed their Goethe Institut exams with an overall score of 80% or higher. All of them passed have their exams. One of my recent students who took the B1 exam at the Goethe Institut after five months of German tuition passed with flying colours, achieving an average score of over 90%. Four months later, she also passed the C1 exam with 77%. C1 is the second highest level and enables you to study and work in Germany. In other words, she went from knowing just a few German words to fluency in nine months. Whilst this is exceptional, getting to advanced level German in less than a year is a feasible goal for really committed students.

Success is of course dependant on the student’s commitment to revision between lessons.

--------Politics and Philosophy-----------------------------------------------------------------

Over the past six years, I acted as a tutor in politics and philosophy at RWTH Aachen University, for various colleges of the University of Oxford, and most recently for the LSE. My teaching has consistently been rated as "very good" or "outstanding" by my undergraduates.

The following courses, which I taught at universities, give you an indication of my areas of expertise: "Introduction to Political Theory" (LSE, 2012-2015); "Theory of Politics", "Political Thought: Plato to Rousseau", "Political Thought: Bentham to Weber", "Modern Political Thought" and "Postmodern Political Thought" (Oxford, 2010-2012); "Introduction to Political Science", including Comparative Government and International Relations (RWTH, 2005-2006). In addition, I have extensive experience with AQA and Edexcel exam boards in both philosophy and politics.

Having taught at Oxford for many years, I'm also qualified to prepare students for interviews at the University of Cambridge and Oxford.

------- Practicalities ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My lessons usually take place at my student's home, in quiet cafes in Central London or at my office in Camden Town. I'm happy to provide references by former and current students upon request.

Please don't hesitate to contact me should you have any additional questions.

I look forward to working with you.

Many thanks,

Jens
