About David
I am an undergraduate student at Oxford University, Balliol College, reading Classics. I have four years' experience as a part-time teacher in conjunction with my degree. I was awarded First Class (Scholar's Distinction) in Honour Moderations, the Robin Hollway Scholarship for academic achievement, and I was placed first on the Classics Admission Test (CAT) for Oxford. I secured an Academic Scholarship to Abingdon School, and on leaving I was awarded an Academic Prize for Classics. At GCSE, I obtained 11 9s, and at A-Level 4 A*s (in Latin, Greek, English Literature and Ancient History). I began to read Shakespeare from a very young age, relishing any play I could find in production, on paper. I still know some scenes from Macbeth, from Hamlet and Romeo & Juliet by heart! So, A-Level English came quite naturally, although I surprised myself with full marks on the Pre-19th century Lit. paper! Throughout this time, I have also nurtured a passion for (writing) poetry.

I love English literature; teaching is my reward. In lessons, we will discuss secondary scholarship on set-texts, compile resources on the major themes and main characters, answer provocative essay questions – all centred, of course, on exam preparation and formal style. My lessons are inspired by the Oxford-style tutorial system, with a focus on the critical skills needed for A* grades. I learn very independently, so I have an appreciation for what may or may not be a useful revision technique. It also allows me to sympathise with a student’s individual requirements, which is essential. Our lessons can take place in the most beautiful classrooms at Balliol College, near Oxford or online, whichever is best for you.

David is a unique and compassionate teacher. He approaches critical issues in (especially English) literature with novelty and insight, and encouraged me to do the same. His lessons are never lacking in excitement, but at the same time, the content we cover is rigorous. I trust his experience, as well as the obvious delight in his profession. Any student, I think, will quickly become confident in David’s ability, as well as their own.
