About Joshua
I offer a highly specialised, person-centred approach to art education, creative research, and portfolio development. Traditional academic structures—from secondary school classrooms to rigid undergraduate and postgraduate degree frameworks—frequently fail creative thinkers who do not fit standard institutional boxes. Whether it manifests as disengagement and behavioural friction in younger students or research paralysis, theoretical confusion, and structural roadblocks for BA, MA, and PhD candidates, standard educational systems often confuse or suppress individual voice. My teaching methodology treats non-traditional, non-linear, and individual ways of thinking not as barriers, but as vital assets for creative and scholarly innovation.
As a university lecturer with 13 years of higher-education teaching experience at top London art schools—frequently covering senior academic staff roles, course-leader responsibilities, and unit design—I hold a BFA, an MFA, and a PhD in Art and Design. My practice spans studio fine art (painting, drawing, printmaking), graphic design, digital media, and critical theory. Whether guiding a young student through competitive GCSE/A-Level portfolio preparation or mentoring undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral candidates through complex dissertation writing and thesis architecture, I provide a clear, empathetic, and structured framework for success

Teaching Methodology: The "Problem-Posing" Framework
Traditional tutoring focuses on passive imitation. My approach focuses on empowered agency and critical problem-solving.
For GCSE & A-Level Students, I strip away exclusionary academic friction, replacing confusion with structured visual blueprints, step-by-step formulas, and personalised diagnostic tools. I help students unlock their unique artistic voice, transform studio practice into rigorous research, and build stand-out portfolios for elite art and design school entries.
For BA, MA & PhD Students: I specialise in demystifying high-level critical theory, research methodologies, and dissertation architecture. I help advanced researchers formulate original research questions, structure complex literature reviews, apply analytical frameworks, and align studio output with theoretical rigour.
What a Typical Session Looks Like
Sessions are tailored around the student's immediate goals and long-term trajectory:
[1] Diagnostic Check-In (10 mins): Reviewing recent progress, identifying creative blocks, and establishing a clear focus for the session. Targeted
[2] Studio/Theoretical Workshop (35 mins): Deep-dive work—whether that involves hands-on portfolio refinement, unpacking critical texts, or editing dissertation chapters line-by-line. Actionable
[3] Roadmap (15 mins): Synthesising key takeaways and leaving the student with a clear, step-by-step milestone plan for their independent work before the next meeting.
Sessions are typically 60 minutes long, with extended 90-minute or 2-hour intensive research blocks available for advanced portfolio projects and thesis development.
