About Samuel
In addition to being a PhD candidate at UBC's department of English, I also hold two degrees (a BA and an MA) in English. I have over 15 years of experience working with students of various levels (both in discussion groups as well as privately) to help them master the essay form. Outside of academia, I am a published poet and a freelance journalist with over ten years of experience writing for magazines, newspapers, and literary journals. Also, my meme game is really strong.

Essay-writing can be a mysterious and frustrating task! In my years of teaching as a TA for English undergraduate classes at UBC, I've noticed that my students often struggle with the genre of academic writing—a problem compounded by university professors who expect students to already know the basics.
Over years of teaching in university classrooms, I've personally developed and refined a fun and accessible system for teaching the fundamentals of writing essays. I specialise in English literature, and would love to demystify close reading and literary analysis for you. At the same time, I am experienced at teaching academic writing in general, and have developed an approachable method to help you acquire tricky skills such as developing an original thesis, fleshing out an argument, incorporating secondary sources, and proper use of citations.
Whether you're a high school student who wants to get a headstart on prepping for college, or a university student struggling with her essays, I'm confident I can help you get better at writing. If you've ever found yourself dreading an essay deadline because academic writing makes you anxious, don't hesitate to reach out!
