About Hao

Hi, I am Hao.

I am a PhD candidate in Human-Computer Interaction at Swinburne University of Technology. I offer help to university students, researchers and makers who are building interactive prototypes, games and sensor-based devices with Unity, Unreal Engine and Arduino. We can also analyse the data from your prototype with the tools that you need, such as Python. Our lessons can be in English or Mandarin. I also hold a valid Working with Children Check.

Throughout my work, I have built interactive systems that connect people, sensors and machines. At the Chinese Academy of Sciences, I wrote multimodal perception software in Unity and connected several sensors to it to capture people's eye gaze, hand gestures, voice and facial expressions. I then used this input to control robotic arms and mobile robots. During my master's research, I focused on eye tracking and multimodal sensing. In my PhD, I design and develop interactive exercise systems for older adults in aged care, combining software and hardware. When you need your prototype to connect sensors, code and hardware, we can build it together step by step, from capturing the input to producing the output.

I teach prototyping through building and testing. As a teaching assistant at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, I ran tutorials and studio sessions in a game design course, where students turned their first ideas into playable prototypes through hands-on making and playtesting. I received an Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award for my work in this course. As a disability support worker, I now tutor a student in Unreal Engine and prepare my own tutorials on topics such as moving platforms, Animation Blueprints and coin collection systems. In our lessons, we work on your own project in the same way, building and testing it one step at a time.

Together, we turn your idea into a working interactive prototype and make sense of the data that it collects. You might be a university student working on a studio or capstone project, an Honours, Masters or PhD researcher who needs a prototype for a study, or a maker with an idea of your own. Your project might be a game, an augmented or virtual reality experience, or a device with sensors.

We start from what you want your prototype to do, and then we choose the tools that suit your project, such as Unity, Unreal Engine or Arduino. When you need both software and hardware, we combine them in one prototype. In each lesson, we move your own project forward through live coding, worked examples, debugging and code reviews.

If your prototype collects interaction logs, sensor readings or survey responses, we can clean, analyse and visualise the data together with the analysis tools that you need, such as Python. If you want your prototype to recognise patterns in your data, we can explore machine learning as well. For assessed university projects, we unpack the project requirements together and practise the techniques for building a reliable working system.
