About Marisa
My academic journey culminated in a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2013, followed by a doctorate in Toxicology and Cancer Biology in 2019. My doctoral research delved into the intricate world of protein metabolism, RNA regulation, and their roles in neurodegenerative processes. Subsequently, I embarked on an 18-month industrial postdoctoral fellowship, where I continued to explore neurodegeneration, with a particular emphasis on membrane biology and G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling. Currently, I hold a position as a scientist specializing in the design of RNA therapeutics. This role allows me to apply and expand upon the diverse skill set I acquired during my graduate studies and postdoctoral work. A crucial aspect of my current responsibilities involves effectively communicating complex scientific concepts to both fellow researchers and non-scientific audiences, bridging the gap between specialized knowledge and broader understanding.

My approach to teaching involves understanding gaps in knowledge and building a functional learning model for my students. It is not enough to memorize information, but to be able to think critically about a topic and be able to explain it. I can adapt to any learning style and have experience in teaching/ tutoring up through PhD levels of material in the fields of cell and molecular biology.
