About Mikael
I’m Mikael Hellstrom, PhD, a former university political science instructor and autistic academic with more than 12 years of teaching experience.
I now focus on helping university and graduate students—especially autistic, ADHD, and other neurodivergent students—navigate the parts of academic work that often feel unclear or overwhelming.
My strengths are helping students make sense of complex ideas, clarify arguments, organize large projects, interpret academic expectations, and turn “I have no idea where to start” into a concrete next step.
I bring both academic experience and lived experience of neurodivergence. My approach is structured, direct, supportive, and non-judgmental.

These sessions are designed around what you are actually stuck on.
I can help with:
• academic writing and essay structure
• research papers, literature reviews, and thesis planning
• turning vague feedback into concrete revision steps
• managing large or overwhelming academic projects
• prioritizing when everything feels urgent
• preparing for supervisor or instructor meetings
• clarifying research questions and arguments
• political science and social-science theory
• executive-function-friendly planning and accountability
I do not write assignments for students or provide therapy. Instead, I help you understand the task, organize your thinking, make decisions, and develop a process you can actually use.
Sessions are particularly well suited to autistic, ADHD, and other neurodivergent students who may struggle with ambiguity, competing ideas, academic overwhelm, or the unwritten expectations of university life.

I've known Mikael for a very long time and I'm very impressed with all his knowledge and ability to explain things, give sources and reason things out. He's reliable and committed to sharing his knowledge. If I needed tutoring in the pol sci field I would absolutely turn to Mikael!
Mikael was my professor for two separate third year university courses.
Mikael is an excellent teacher who is able to take complex topics in political science, and break them down into very understandable chunks. He is patient, caring, and clearly cares about his students. He is passionate about his field of study, and he inspired me to study it more passionately. Moreover, if you have difficulty with a concept or idea - professor Hellstrom is comfortable sitting with you on the concept until you understand it, rather than steamrolling on to whatever is next. I remember submitting my final paper for my course, and him sending it back to me; with guidance on where I needed to develop my ideas.
Beyond that, Mikael takes a creative and immersive approach to teaching like no other I've had before. Mikael excels at creating unique roleplay scenarios to help you drop into the reality of the things you are studying. I still vividly remember the experience of being a part of a mock newspaper agency in soviet Russia - and having to experience the reality of living in a surveillance police-state (in a safe and engaging way). This fit my learning style perfectly, and I remember feeling excited to complete Mikael's homework, even when I was burnt out from reading pages on pages of endless text.
It was a privilege to be Mikael's student, and I hope you give him the chance to give you the same experience.View more recommendations
