About Preston
I am an English professor of composition and literature. I am a PhD student in the English program at the University of Miami, where my research concerns diaspora studies, ethnic studies, and contemporary world literature. I have familiarity with the Spanish language enough to teach English to non-native speakers using Spanish and English lessons.
Soy un profesor de composición y literatura. Soy estudiante doctoral a la Universidad de Miami y mis estudias son en las estudias diásporas, las estudias etnicas, y literatura mundial en el contemporáneo. Soy familiar con la lengua español y puedo enseñar inglés para los estudiantes que no puedan hablar en inglés o los que tienen dificultad con hablando en inglés.

I use several methodological approaches to teaching literature and English as a second language. For ESL students, I find that it's usually best to encourage students to read aloud or and watch different media in English with Spanish subtitles or vice versa so they can get used to hearing English being spoken. Teaching literature, I use close-reading methods to try and connect thematic and structural elements of cultural texts to wider cultural and political questions and issues.
