About James

I welcome the opportunity to teach you bassoon, at whatever level you're at! I've worked a lot with amateur adult players, young students and also college/conservatory students. No matter how old or young, it's never too late to learn to play this instrument.

About the lesson

If you're serious about learning to play the bassoon, I use the methods I was taught at the Juilliard School. My teachers have included Milan Turkovic, Harold Goltzer, Dennis Godburn, Sylvia Kushner, James Dickie and Carmine Caruso. I basically teach the Simon Kovar method, which I learned at Juilliard. Most of the great bassoonists of the last generation in the U.S. studied with Kovar. I enjoy teaching beginners as well as advanced players!

Perfect! James is outstanding. Patient and precise, an inspiring player as well as instructor. We connected with him to tutor my son for an audition, and could not have been happier with the process or the result. Cannot recommend him highly enough!

James's response
I very much enjoyed teaching Christopher’s son. He’s a very talented musician and has an excellent understanding of music theory. He has a very good ear and his intonation was impeccable. Excellent student!

I had an amazing time studying with James. He was patient, positive, and fun, which made me feel comfortable and supported, especially after taking a long break from playing. His passion for music and expertise helped boost both my skills and confidence. It was truly a privilege to learn from him.

There was a world of information that I did not know. He quickly assessed the situation and began to impart me with foundational information. With very little experience on the instrument I imagine it to be a challenge for an instructor. Jim was not daunted by my inexperience. I found Jim to be extremely patient and highly knowledgeable.

My experience studying with James was life changing . Not only is he a consummate musician and first class teacher he took the time to help me choose which conservatories to audition for and helped me prepare thoroughly for my auditions . I’m now happily in one of the best conservatories in the USA and have only James to thank !
