Teaching for me is the best opportunity to share my academic expertise, my life skills and experience. I relish the opportunity to facilitate individuals on their journey of lifelong learning andI guiding students to unearth their potential and innovation. Moreover, allow them to build the skills to introspect so they can carve their pathways into the future. I believe that through teaching, I would be able to promote respect, good rapport, objectiveness, reflectiveness and security for the students that I would potentially teach.
Education is paramount for growth, stability, a sense of belonging, promoting adaptability, opportunity and independence. It allows students to not only learn about real-life and world issues, past and present, but develop emotional intelligence, empathy and perspective. I have studied in a boarding school, unisex and co-educational setting, and have adapted to different teaching systems in different countries, including Australia, Hong Kong and England. It has allowed me to recognise the importance of valuing cultural differences and individuality. I am fluent in Chinese, Cantonese and English and have worked with students from the pre-nursery to university level, as well as individuals with learning difficulties and special needs. I have had the honour to teach different curriculums including A-Level, AP, IB, GCSE/GCSE and the HKDSE. I have also been a classroom teacher, a tutor as well as an online tutor. Working in Hong Kong has not only allowed me to consolidate and excel personally, but concrete my pedagogy in teaching. I have worked in local and international settings, secondary and post-compulsory education, as well as tutorial institutions. Being able to work with such a diverse, range of students in different settings has allowed me to build my teaching abilities and adapt to different settings, adjust expectations and be flexible.
Teaching is not only based on academic input, but also skills for life, and how to function positively in society and gain new skills that contribute to a better future, therefore my work experience with individuals with challenging behaviour also contribute to strong base of skills which supports my abilities in a classroom. In order for effective communication, it is paramount for me to tailor the delivery of my information, to ensure the recipient fully understands the content, and in a classroom setting it would be essential for me to deliver my lessons in a language and tone that students would understand. I believe that it also paramount to be flexible with principles and mindsets to accept different working styles, and be able to delegate work to the team, voice my opinion/concerns and supervise colleagues when necessary. In a school environment, communication with staff, stakeholders and pupils have been the key to success for the most part in my experience. In regards to managing people, I have worked with individuals with challenging behaviour, where I have had to manage and support their vulnerabilities, assess their risk and address their individual needs. When opposing behaviour occurs, it is my duty to resolve issues, be diplomatic and develop plans and prevention for the future. Respect and boundaries need to be clear in a working environment, but being approachable and empathetic is crucial in any workplace, especially in a school environment.
One of the focal points for my educational approach is awareness of self- improvement and an essential criterion is reflective practice. I believe this to be very important for an individual to be able to self critique and recognise their abilities, learn other skills from other professionals, and to respond to constructive criticism in order for improvement. Teaching is the best and most effective way to ensure progression, personal development and hopefully the eagerness to continue to learn. I hope to develop a reflective, independent approach to problems and identify your own educational values as well as working together with students towards their own independence as learners.
