About Werner

I have taught numerous university first-year courses in Physics and Advanced Physics courses, both at the University of Stellenbosch and its neighbor, the University of the Western Cape. In 2018 I gave classes and tutorials to 525 first-year students. Students who did their part passed easily. My own research specialty is theoretical nuclear physics, and although I’m retired – and therefore have quite a bit of spare time for online teaching – I’m still very active in research.

About the lesson

I use state-of-the-art technology like Zoom to communicate with students. The content of what I teach is tailored to suit a particular student's needs. I make use of a variety of technical features like PowerPoint, whiteboard, paint, etc., to convey concepts and I give regular homework problems for the student to work on. As my field of specialty is Theoretical Nuclear Physics, I also teach MATHEMATICS, at the first-year university and grade 12 level. COMPLETE PHYSICS COURSE: I offer a full first-year university level physics course (called a Masterclass at Superprof). Students can also do sections of the course if they wish. The number of lectures involved depends on the progress of the student. I give regular homework problems that students have to submit, also for the purpose of assessing their proficiency. The syllabus of the course follows: Introduction to physics – survey of modern physics Mechanics: Units Kinematics Vectors Dynamics and Newton’s laws Circular motion, angular momentum Work and energy Equilibrium of bodies: translational and rotational, torque, levers Linear momentum and collisions Elasticity Heat, temperature and kinetic theory Fluids – hydrostatics and hydrodynamics Sound Light, optics and the eye Atomic and nuclear physics Electricity and magnetism

I have known Professor Werner since 1988 when he was my lecturer in Astro Physics at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. During this time I was already pleasantly surprised with his ability to bring Physics to life and explain abstract concepts in a simple manner. In later years when I was employed as the coordinator of the Inductive Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrophotometer unit I personally got to know him as a dedicated colleague and ebullient lecturer that always took pride in the results of his students. Werner also excelled as one of the forerunners in the field of Nuclear Physics in the world and participated in many new developments. He has a broad knowledge of all the different interdisciplinary aspects of Physics and can entertain a class with numerous practical examples in order to enhance understanding of the theoretical work.
Lately, during the Covid Challenge, he has impressed me with the rate at which he acquired the proficient ability to perform online teaching by using the Zoom platform in conjunction with Applets, PowerPoint presentations, and other online resources. I have firsthand experience of
his teaching and am still reaping the fruits of his dedication.

I would recommend him for any position that he would apply for.
