About Duncan

I am very active as a performer mainly working in the jazz genre. I perform regularly around the UK and beyond. With my own projects I have performed all over the world from Rochester Jazz Festival in New York to Shanghai Jazz Festival to Ronnie Scotts Jazz Club to opening for Joshua Redman at the Barbican Concert Hall. Teaching has always been an important part of my career having held a visiting tutor position at Trinity College of Music as well as being a saxophone and recorder teacher at Kew Music Service. I also ran a jazz workshop at the Hideaway Jazz Club in Streatham every Monday for 8 years. I have released multiple albums under my own name and was also the youngest recipient of the Spike Robinson Saxophone Award. My album ‘Scenes and Sounds’ with contemporary band Partikel was nominated in the ‘album of the year’ category at the Parliamentary Jazz Awards. “It takes a high level of creative and physical energy and Duncan Eagles has both in spades” BBC Music Magazine "Saxophonist Duncan Eagles holds the stage with his attractively dry tone, sharpness and the urgent ferocity of his tenor improvising" John Fordham, The Guardian Duncan is a Yanagisawa Saxophone endorsed artist.

About the lesson

I am experienced at teaching all levels and believe that firstly and most importantly learning music should be fun!! As soon as you are enjoying yourself progress follows. I have taught complete beginners and trained them through the Associated Board and Guildhall Grading syllabuses in both jazz and classical disciplines, as well as students looking to apply to music colleges at degree level. I have prepared many students successfully for entry to Middlesex University, Guildhall School of Music and Trinity College of Music. I also enjoy teaching students who are retired and who have taken up the saxophone as a hobby. Each lesson is tailored to suit the needs and approach of the student. Some students excel in having a framework to work in towards exams and gradings, and that is great, but I also respect that this is not for everyone. Some of my students work and progress outside of this system. I make sure we are always progressing by choosing material and subjects to study together with the student. For students that are new to the instrument we usually work through 'Learn as You Play Saxophone' by Peter Wastall. It is a very well written book with a variety of interesting material and duets to work through. Alongside this I have a variety of exercises and techniques that we will go through designed to build and develop a strong, rounded tone and an even technique.

Duncan is an experienced saxophonist who taught my son for a long time. His progression was astounding to see mainly due to the tutelage of Duncan. He is imaginative, well articulated and professional. He has a natural ability where you feel safe and supported around him, allowing his students to grow. Can't recommend him anymore!
