About Thomas

Thomas started his musical journey at the age of 8, receiving saxophone lessons weekly before deciding to embrace his musical passion into his studies. Whilst studying music at a young age academically, Thomas excelled through the ABRSM grades on the saxophone accomplishing Grade 8 Distinction by the age of 16. After completing his Music GCSE with an A, Thomas began to focus on his Diploma for Saxophone. In the Summer of 2017, he attained a distinction in his Diploma and was announced an Associate of the Royal Schools of Music. In the same year, he achieved a grade A in Music A-level at Farnborough Sixth Form College, where he studied as a Music Scholar. Farnborough Sixth Form College has gained a reputation to be one of the finest academic institutions of further education in which to study music at A-Level. The Department of Education, describing it as having "a distinguished contribution to music education in the UK". While studying at Farnborough, Thomas seized the opportunity to work alongside and learn from fellow enthusiastic musicians where he would attain other musical skills, set up and run Jazz Ensembles and perform a Saxophone Concerto with a full, professional Orchestra. Thomas attended the University of London, Goldsmiths where he was awarded a scholarship to study BMus Music and graduated in the summer of 2020 with first class honours. Thomas now attends the music conservatoire, Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he is studying for a Masters in Music. Thomas has been tutored by industry leaders such as Paul Bartholomew, Martin Speake, Martin Robertson, Trish Clowes and Mick Foster. Whilst studying in London, Thomas has performed across the city contributing in all styles of music. Thomas has been involved in a number of jazz ensembles and groups including lead alto for the Creative Jazz Ensemble, Guildhall Big Band and a member of Kings College London Big Band. He has also been involved with more contemporary ensembles in experimental music with electronics; his most recent work demonstrating his participation with the work of Stockhausen.

About the lesson

I primarily focus my teaching on what the student wants to achieve. This can be working through formal graded studies or just learning the saxophone as an enjoyable hobby. I balance the lesson in order to fit in technical exercises to help the student progress as an instrumentalist but also include fun pieces to maintain motivation.

I’ve been Thomas’ student for a year and he’s always been friendly, dedicated, and has pushed me to improve beyond what I would have imagined possible. I have a hectic schedule and re-organising a lesson for another day, even last minute, has never been a problem. I would strongly recommend him.

Thomas is an excellent and inspiring saxophonist and teacher. I am a beginner player and want to keep saxophone as more of a hobby. Thomas's lessons, as well as being fun and insightful, are very professional and rewarding. I feel like I am constantly advancing and progressing without any pressure. Thomas is very open and encompassing to what I want out of a lesson while still being professional and responsible in terms of guiding me to where I want to go with the right attitudes and exercises.
