Maths is often taught as an arbitrary set of rules and if one fails to recall these or is perplexed by where they might originate they are dismissed and often labelled as ‘bad at maths’. I was one of those students who were ‘bad at maths’ until I came across a teacher who engaged with my question in a meaningful way sparking a passion I may very well never have discovered. Now I’m a second year student at the University of Exeter studying Mathematics BSc. I hope I can ignite a similar passion or at least help students realise that the fault doesn’t lie in them but in how the subject is often taught.
