About Olivier
I am Olivier.
I hold a PhD in biology and I spent twelve years as a university lecturer, at York, at Aberdeen, and at a medical school in Papua New Guinea, where I taught chemistry, maths, physics and biology to first year medical students.
At York I designed and taught the postgraduate Advanced Statistics with R course. I have supervised and marked 45 student research projects, from undergraduate dissertations to a PhD, and I have examined PhD theses at two other universities.
I now teach privately, one to one. Most people who come to me are not struggling because they are not clever enough. They are missing one earlier step, or they are working without the supervision they should have had. Neither of those is their fault, and both are fixable.
I am calm and I do not rush. I will explain the same thing a second and a third way until it lands, and no question is too basic to ask me. I currently teach an autistic A-Level student, so I am used to adapting pace and structure to the person in front of me. I work with university students and researchers on statistics, data analysis and dissertations. I teach A-Level and GCSE maths, biology and science. And I work with adults coming back to study after a break.
My aim is always the same. Not to give you the answer, but to leave you able to do it yourself.

MY METHOD
I can help you with the supervision you are maybe not getting.
I can help you understand something you are stuck on.
Most people come to me asking which test to run. That is almost never the real question. The real question is what your data can actually answer. Get that right and the test chooses itself. Get it wrong and you can run a perfect analysis that does not answer your research question, which is where marks are lost.
So I start with your research question and your data, not with the software. I hold a PhD, published research for over twenty years, and taught statistics to science students at every university level. I have also supervised and marked student projects, so I know what a marker looks for in a methods and results chapter.
YOUR FIRST SESSION
The first thirty minutes are free, and are a scoping call rather than a working session. Bring your research question, a description of your data, and your deadline. I will tell you honestly what is involved, roughly how many hours it will take, and whether I am the right person to help. If I am not, I will say so. Analysis work starts from the first paid session.
A TYPICAL SESSION
We start with what you have done since last time and what is blocking you now. We then agree exactly what this session will produce: one clear output, not five loose ends. We work through it together on a shared screen, and you drive the software wherever you can, because you need to be able to repeat it on your own. In the last few minutes I write down what we did, why we did it that way, and what to do before next time.
You get a written note after every session.
WHAT I WILL AND WILL NOT DO
I will help you choose the right method, run the analysis with you, read the output, and plan the write up. I will teach you the code or the menu clicks so you can repeat it on your own data.
I will not write your dissertation, and I will not run your analysis for you while you watch. You will be able to defend every number in your work as your own. Empowering and supporting your statistical understanding until you own it.
Everything we discuss stays confidential.
WHAT TO BRING
Your research question, or your best attempt at it. Your data file, in whatever state it is in, because messy is normal and cleaning it is part of the work. Your assignment brief and marking criteria if you have them. Your deadline, honestly. And whichever software your department expects you to use.
SOFTWARE AND LEVELS
R and RStudio, including getting the code to actually run. SPSS and Excel, and reading the output from any of them. I work with undergraduate and masters dissertations, PhD chapters, and researchers preparing work for publication. I also help with study design before you collect anything, which is far cheaper than fixing it afterwards.
GOOD TO KNOW
Sessions are online, or face to face. Dissertation work usually suits a block of sessions rather than a weekly slot, and we can plan that in the free call. If you are close to a deadline, tell me at the start, because it changes what I recommend.
Please give 24 hours notice to move or cancel a session.

Details
Statistics doesn't have to hurt.
Most people arrive stuck on which test to run, with a deadline and a folder of messy data. That is a normal place to start. We work through it together until you can see what your data can actually answer, and until you can explain that choice to your supervisor in your own words.
Your first 30 minutes are free. Tell me your research question, your data and your deadline, and I will tell you honestly whether I am the person who can help. Blocks of 5 and 10 hours are available. Most dissertation work suits a block rather than a weekly slot.
I work in R and RStudio, and in Excel. I do not use SPSS, so if your department requires it I am not the right person.
