My approach usually starts with deriving the core intuition behind the concept being covered. This will usually involve very generalized explanations via descriptive language and peripheral analogies which will help the student understand the substance of the ideas presented outside of how they're applied in the relevant course. After we develop this foundation, I move on to examples that we interactively figure out together. This way, the student gains experience deriving solutions rather than just remembering solutions. This approach usually works best for courses that involve very nuanced and intricate concepts. Namely, Elementary Calculus and Algebra.
