About Ilinca

Hello everyone! My name is Ilinca, an economics graduate with a genuine love for making complex ideas simple. I studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at the University of Warwick, and went on to complete an MSc in Emerging Economies and International Development at King's College London, graduating with Distinction.

Alongside my academic work, I've picked up experience across research, policy, and international institutions — from analysing housing data at Warwick, to writing briefings for the European Parliament and the National Bank of Romania. I'm Romanian, fluent in English, and speak French and some Japanese too, so I'm used to explaining things clearly across different backgrounds and learning styles.

Outside of academics, I've mentored students from underrepresented backgrounds applying to top universities, which is where my love of teaching really comes from — I like helping people get to the "aha" moment, and I bring that same patience and clarity to every lesson.

NB: I support students preparing for the TARA, the new admissions test used by UCL and (from 2027) Oxford. Reasoning under pressure is something I've had a lot of practice with myself — I scored 170/170 (96th percentile) on GRE Quantitative and 163/170 (92nd percentile) on Verbal — and I enjoy passing on that same structured way of thinking to students.

Economics clicks faster than people think. Here's how I make that happen:

➊ NO JARGON ZONE: If I can't explain a concept without buzzwords, I haven't taught it properly. Every topic, from price elasticity to exchange rate policy, gets broken down into plain language first, then built back up to exam-ready answers.

➋ LEARN FROM SOMEONE WHO ACTUALLY DOES THIS: I'm not just teaching from a textbook. I currently work as a Quantitative Research Assistant at the University of Warwick, analysing real housing and economic data, and I am joining the University of Oxford soon as a Research Assistant. I hold an MSc in Emerging Economies and International Development from King's College London (Distinction). When we cover a concept, I can show you how it plays out in actual research and policy.

➌ I KNOW WHAT EXAMINERS ARE LOOKING FOR: From writing policy briefings at the European Parliament to preparing macroeconomic reports for the National Bank of Romania, I've spent years learning how to communicate economic ideas clearly and precisely to demanding audiences. I bring that same eye for precision to mark schemes — knowing where students lose easy points, and how to fix it.

➍ FEEDBACK GOES BOTH WAYS: I check in with every student regularly to see what's working and what isn't. Lessons adapt to you.

➎ CURRENT EVENTS, NOT JUST PAST PAPERS: Economics is happening in real time, so I use current news stories, trends, and case studies to make abstract concepts stick — then show you how to translate that understanding into strong exam answers.

➏ RESULTS-DRIVEN PREPARATION: GRE Quantitative: 170/170 (96th percentile). Silver Medal, International Economics Olympiad. I know what disciplined, high-stakes exam prep actually looks like, because I've lived it.

->I also offer preparation for the TARA (Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions) — the new admissions test required by UCL and, from 2027 entry, the University of Oxford, including for Economics and PPE applicants. For this I focus sessions on the reasoning skills the test actually rewards: breaking down arguments, spotting flawed logic, and structuring clear, persuasive written responses under timed conditions. This is an area I know well personally — I scored 170/170 (96th percentile) on the GRE Quantitative section and 163/170 (92nd percentile) on Verbal, both of which draw on exactly the kind of critical reasoning and analytical thinking the TARA is built around. I can help you develop those same skills with a clear, practical approach.

◉ Fluent in English & Romanian
◉ Also happy to advise on personal statements and university applications
