About Beatriz
Hi! I’m Beatriz, I went to school at the Lycée Français de Madrid so I speak French, English and Spanish as well as some Italian.
I actually struggled quite a bit with maths at school because I found it difficult to simply apply a formula without understanding the reasoning behind it. That experience now shapes the way I teach since I try to make maths intuitive, understand what is blocking each student, and explain the reasoning behind a method rather than asking them to memorise it.
The funny thing is that I eventually ended up really enjoying maths! I went on to study Mathematics and Philosophy at the University of Warwick, followed by an MSc in Statistics at UCL, and I am currently doing research in machine learning at UCL.
Having struggled with maths myself has taught me that finding something difficult at one stage does not mean you are “bad at maths”, sometimes you just need a different explanation or way of approaching the problem. My aim is to help my students find their way of approaching it

My approach to tutoring is to make sure students genuinely understand the ideas behind what they are doing rather than simply memorising methods or formulae. I aim to make the lessons interactive and to explain concepts with analogies about subjects they are interested in. I adapt each lesson to the student’s level, school curriculum and individual needs, combining clear explanations with worked examples and plenty of practice.
Lessons can follow the student’s schoolwork by helping them with topics they are currently studying, homework and assignments. Or focus on particular areas where they need more confidence. I also like to build confidence in the students by gradually encouraging students to solve problems more independently.
I have a BSc in Mathematics and Philosophy from the University of Warwick and an MSc in Statistics from UCL where I am currently involved in machine learning research. I also have experience tutoring a Year 10 student in Physics, working through his school curriculum and Compos (Oxford extra schoolwork) assignments.
A typical lesson is 60 minutes, although longer sessions can be arranged when useful, particularly for exam preparation.
I offer Mathematics tutoring for GCSE and A Level students, as well as students following the French curriculum, I did the French curriculum myself. I can also tutor Physics, particularly at secondary-school and GCSE level.
