About Laura

I’m an experienced A-Level Sociology and WJEC Criminology teacher, having taught both subjects across both years of the courses. I’m also a qualified examiner for both subjects, which has given me a strong understanding of exam expectations and what makes a successful answer.

My academic background is in Criminology, a subject closely linked to Sociology. I then completed my teacher training in Further Education and began my teaching career, developing a real passion for helping students understand and engage with these subjects.

More recently, I have moved into a school-based role as a university counsellor. Alongside this, I have continued tutoring and working as an examiner to maintain my subject knowledge and keep up to date with current exam requirements.

Although I enjoy my current role, I have really missed teaching Sociology and Criminology — subjects I have always been passionate about. This is why I’m returning to tutoring. Whether you need help understanding the content, improving your exam technique and structure, preparing for exams, or simply building your confidence, I’d love to help. I’m happy to work with students on a short-term or long-term basis, depending on what they need.

A little about me outside of teaching: I’ve recently moved to the Oxford area with my husband, after spending several years living in Germany. I’m enjoying exploring my new surroundings and getting settled into the area.

About the lesson

I believe in a holistic, student-centred approach. I adapt my teaching to each individual, building a positive working relationship so students feel comfortable, supported and able to learn in a way that suits them.

Sociology is all around us, so I encourage students to connect ideas and theories to their own experiences and the society they live in. Lessons are conversational and interactive, with plenty of discussion, debate, examples and questions, while building the knowledge and exam skills needed to succeed.

Lessons typically last 45 minutes to an hour. I believe focused, engaging sessions are more effective than overly long lessons, particularly after a full day of learning.
