About Christophe

I have worked in an independent school in Oxford for 36 years, as a teacher (French and Film Studies), head of department (Modern Languages and Film Studies) and director of studies.
I also have experience in private tutoring and teaching evening classes for adults.
In my different capacities, I have regularly used a targeted, one-to-one approach as I find that it makes an enormous difference to students' progress.
I am a native French speaker, with over 36 years of experience of living and working in English speaking environments.
As a French teacher and tutor, I have prepared students of various ages (teenagers to retirement), abilities (beginners to post A level) and nationalities for different exams, or just helped them improve their proficiency or knowledge of French culture. I have often supported students with learning difficulties.
I have also taught A level Film Studies for 25 years.
As head of the Modern Languages and Film Studies departments, I have acquired extensive knowledge of UK syllabuses and exams.
As a director of studies, working closely with around 8 students per year, I have ample experience in supporting students individually with their wellbeing, learning, and university or job applications.
About 10 years ago, I designed an extra-curricular Linguistics programme and have delivered it since then.

About the lesson

I have always believed in adapting my teaching to individual students’ aims, needs and learning styles.
With a new student, I start by discussing their aims, their reasons for getting a tutor, finding out about their starting level, identifying weaker areas and gaps, and agreeing on a programme.
The programme can then be adjusted according to the student’s progress and needs.
An extreme example of this is a private student a few years back who just wanted to ‘do some French’. In our first session I suggested she might want to aim for a GCSE exam, just to give structure to her learning. In the second session I started mentioning AS level. She ended up achieving an A grade in the A level after just 8 months, with one session a week and a lot of independent learning.
But not everyone wants or needs to rush an A level, and that’s absolutely fine!
